IT STARTS WITH
GOOD PEOPLE.
Blackstar offers a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy great beer, food, and music while taking in some of the town’s most picturesque views of its beloved Big Mountain.
The Great Northern Brewing Company was originally built by renowned architect Joe Esherick in 1994, for the purpose of making Blackstar Double Hopped Golden Lager and other fine beers, and served the community of Whitefish for many years.

MONTANA STYLE
CASUAL ATMOSPHERE.
Wanting to preserve this iconic downtown landmark, Rob Isackson oversaw the careful renovation of the spectacular space as a brewery restaurant. The creative design team, of the acclaimed CRÈME / Jun Aizaki Architecture agency, utilized local wood and natural materials as well as a color palette inspired by the historic train cars that were part of the Great Northern Railway, to stay true to the natural beauty of the region and the town’s railroading past. The space covers three floors, including several balconies and a rooftop terrace, and is designed to be conducive to gatherings both large and small, achieving a sense of intimacy in spite of the building’s impressive proportions.
REFRESHING, LOCAL,
GREAT BEER.
An extensive collection of Jeremiah Johnson beer is brewed on site with world-class barley malt, sourced from the heart of Montana’s Golden Triangle. Our location is privy to experimental flavors from Jeremiah Johnson you won't find anywhere else.
Serving satisfying, family-style comfort dishes, and using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, Blackstar promises to be a neighborhood favorite for locals and visitors to enjoy great food in a casual but inspired setting.
And as a neighborhood and community-centric business, Blackstar will continue the valued tradition of supporting local community efforts, like the North Valley Food Bank and other local pantries addressing food insecurity in the Flathead Valley.
